Independence Day lessons for church life
- Return to the basics— On July 4 we commemorate the origins of our country. In terms of faith, we also periodically need to hear again the foundational stories of Creation, the Israelites and, of course, Jesus.
- Honor the gift of freedom — “For freedom Christ has set us free … do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1, ESV). We strive as citizens to preserve and live out our national freedom. Likewise, as citizens of God’s kingdom we live gladly in the freedom of salvation and share that gift with others.
- Enjoy community — July 4 is known for picnics, parades and other community gatherings. Similarly, the church is nourished by coming together for worship, meals and other special events.
- Be light in the darkness — As fireworks brighten the sky with light and color, the church is called to display the Gospel’s unique light in a dark world. Our word dynamite and the Greek word for power — as in, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (Acts 1:8) — share a root. Through God’s power in us, we share Jesus — dynamically! — with others.
We would like to thank everyone who helped make our VBS a success. We had an average attendance of 69, with 5 professing faith in Jesus at the time of this writing. Our total enrollment was 82. Your donations of water and money for food and supplies is greatly appreciated every year. Please see the insert for those who worked tirelessly in all areas to make our VBS successful. We encourage you to begin praying for 2018 VBS now, and ask God where He would have you serve as we get our GAME ON!

Dear WGBC Contributors,
On June 9, 2017 my computer was invaded by a hacker. As Financial Secretary, I kept information on my computer such as your name, your check number and the amount for which it was written. I have no routing number, bank names or other sensitive information, so that was not on my computer. I do not know that the hacker could get into your personal information, but I wanted to make you aware of this so you can keep an eye on your accounts. I am very sorry this happened.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me on my cell or at home.
Lorayne J., Financial Secretary
Sunday, July 2, is our Sunday morning Bible study promotion day for our children and youth. Those in 6th grade will move to the Youth group, led by Agustin and Vicky L. and those who graduated from high school will move to the Adult 1 class, led by Amber L. Adults are welcome to attend the class of their choice any time of the year! We look forward to a great 2017-2018 school year for our children!
If you are interested in attending your Arizona Diamondbacks Faith & Family night on Friday, August 25, 2917, please sign up on the sheet on the bulletin board or contact the office. There are 3 sections of seats available: upper level seats (sections 305-327) cost $18.00 each; lower level bleacher seats (sections 101-105/139-144) cost $22.00 each and seats in sections 109-111/133-135 cost $32.00 each. A total of 10 tickets in any combination of these sections is needed for these prices. After the game against the San Francisco Giants, Newsboys will be in concert. If you have any questions, contact the church office. Tickets must be paid for by August 9, 2017.
The pastors and staff of WGBC wish all those celebrating a birthday or anniversary in July a very blessed day.
Our Annual WGBC Back to School Drive begins on July 1 and runs through August 10. We are in need of crayons, pencils, colored markers, erasers, mechanical pencils, note book paper, spiral notebooks, ink pens, bottles of glue, glue sticks, scissors, and boy back packs. If you would like to donate and would like for someone to do your shopping for you, we can do that. Mark your envelope BTS and place your financial donation inside. There will be a tree of hands located in the foyer of the church with items needed. Take a hand and help a child in need. We would like to see each child who attends our church go back to school with a new backpack filled with supplies. See Joy B. with any questions.
Harvest America reports that 38,000 people attended their crusade at the stadium, 83,700 people were at host sites like WGBC and 120,642 viewed the crusade on Face Book Live, with a total of 7,228 professions of faith in Jesus recorded at the stadium, host sites and Face Book. Thank you to all who prayed for this event.
Our Galactic Starveyors Vacation Bible School week is completed; however, we now continue through June and July with Gospel Kid VBS! Jesus had a habit of teaching important information at least three times, in three different ways to His listeners. At WGBC we continue the VBS Bible lessons each Wednesday night for Grades Kindergarten through Youth. This reinforces the lesson and continues the fun of Vacation Bible School. We start at 6:00 pm. with our worship rally in the sanctuary. We are continuing the VBS offering each week to reach our goal of $1,000 for our missionary friends, John and Wanne Dina in Mozambique, Africa. They will use the money to dig and build fresh water wells for villages that have no water. We are now learning about the work of other missionaries in our worship rally. The decorations from the sanctuary and our preschool department will be shared with Southern Baptist Temple in south Phoenix to help their VBS. Unused materials were returned to the LifeWay Store for reimbursement back to our VBS fund. Families are coming to church after attending our Friday night performance! Our teachers and helpers have made the commitment to continue to work through the end of July. Please continue in prayer for VBS, it is NOT over yet! God is good all the time! Please join us each Wednesday evening from 6:00-7:30 pm. for Gospel Kid VBS and Adult Bible Study. Nursery is available for ages 0-4. Searching the visible, discovering the invisible.
Thank you to all who served in our VBS!
